A couple who have lost their child spend the off-season in Venice, among dead-end alleys, damp walls and fog rising off the canals. Donald Sutherland is at his best, the editing weaves present and future together like a mosaic, and the ending of this horror film is one nobody forgets.
John and Laura’s daughter Christine drowns in the pond behind their English home. When John is hired to restore a church in Venice, Laura goes with him, and in a restaurant she meets two elderly sisters. The blind one claims Christine has sent a warning: John is in danger in the city. He doesn’t believe a word of it, but in the alleys he starts glimpsing someone in a little red coat.
