Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Why we chose it

Queen Elizabeth has no husband, no child and conspirators circling her throne. Shekhar Kapur had already made a film about her nine years earlier, which is how Cate Blanchett came to be nominated for an Oscar twice for the same role. She carries this one on her shoulders with a queen’s pride.

Synopsis

It’s 1585, and England’s Queen Elizabeth has no husband and no heir, so her Catholic cousin Mary Stuart sits in an English prison waiting for the crown. Philip II is building a fleet, and a Jesuit plot is taking shape among the people closest to the queen. Then Walter Raleigh comes back from the New World with tobacco and tall tales, and Elizabeth keeps him at her side. So does her favourite lady-in-waiting.
