A sixteen-year-old from the Paris suburbs loves his estate, though it’s about to be demolished. Named after Gagarin, who opened it in 1963, it came down in 2019, but first the film was shot in its empty flats, mixing realism with a space-age fairy tale. You grieve for the buildings like a person.
Gagarine, a vast red-brick estate in Ivry-sur-Seine outside Paris, was once the pride of left-wing architects. Sixteen-year-old Youri has lived there all his life, knows every stairwell and never stops dreaming of space. When the city declares the building unfit to live in and the neighbours begin to move out, he tries to save it with help from Diana and Houssam, until he is the only one left. So he turns his abandoned flat into a self-sufficient space station.
