Why we chose it

Judi Dench and Kate Winslet both play the novelist Iris Murdoch, forty years apart, and between them they show what it costs to lose the thing you were best at. Broadbent won an Oscar and both actresses were nominated, for a hopeful film about a love that proves stronger than time.

Synopsis

In 1950s Oxford, Iris Murdoch is writing her first novel and taking lovers whenever she pleases, to the astonishment of John Bayley, a shy young academic. They marry, and over the decades that follow she becomes a famous and brilliant writer. Then Iris starts losing her words, and John has to speak for both of them.
