Marion Cotillard surely regrets nothing about playing Édith Piaf, since the Academy gave her an Oscar for it. That huge voice comes out of a small, battered body, and the story of a life that was tragic but full of love hits you hard.
After the First World War, little Édith ends up in a brothel run by her father’s mother, where the women who work there bring her up. Then her father takes her away and stands her on the pavement to sing for coins. One day the cabaret owner Louis Leplée stops to listen, and before long he gives her a stage and a new name: Piaf, the sparrow.
