Whit Stillman adapted a story Jane Austen never saw published, and took his title from another of hers, the misspelled “Love and Freindship”. Kate Beckinsale plays a widow busy arranging marriages, her own included, and proves that some books never grow old.
Until the gossip about her love affairs dies down, a beautiful young widow settles in at her relatives’ country estate, determined to find husbands for herself and her daughter. The girl is of an age to marry but has little time for her mother’s schemes, while the widow herself is soon drawing the eye of a handsome young man, a wealthy fool and a scandalously charming lord who happens to be married. It isn’t long before things get out of hand.
