Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Oscar-nominated debut follows five teenage sisters growing up where joy is something only children are allowed, in a house that becomes a prison for their carefree youth. She won’t let a single one of them play the victim, and they’re so full of life it’s almost dangerous.
On the last day of school, five sisters head home by way of the sea, splashing about in the water with boys from their class, and by evening the whole village has heard. Their grandmother locks up the house, takes them out of school and starts teaching them to cook. Before long the matchmakers come knocking, and the youngest sister will come to call the place a wife factory.
