Chie Hayakawa’s dystopian debut, which won a Special Mention for best first film at Cannes, follows a hotel maid in Japan who is three years past the age the government has set. It’s a melancholy film that leaves you asking what a human being is worth in a world run by economics.
In a near-future Japan, the state offers everyone over seventy-five a free and dignified death. Michi is almost eighty and still cleaning hotel rooms when polite young people start turning up at her door to persuade her to sign up for the procedure.
