In Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s film, man is a beast to man: Galician farmers can’t stand their eco-minded French neighbours, and the feud grows day by day until you dread where it’s heading. Winner of nine Goyas, including Best Film and Best Director, it’s far bigger than a rural thriller.
In a village deep in Spanish Galicia, French couple Antoine and Olga have restored a ruin and grow vegetables to sell. Their neighbours, the brothers Xan and Lorenzo, wanted to sell their land for wind turbines, but it was the French couple’s vote that blocked the deal. Ever since, Xan has openly tormented Antoine and their crops keep being sabotaged, so Antoine takes the matter to the police.
