“Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance takes Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz to the Australian coast for a story of love and loss full of sea air. He builds isolation and tenderness into an intimate drama about a lighthouse, a marriage and a decision that can’t be undone.
A few years after the First World War, Tom Sherbourne comes home from the front and takes a job as keeper of the lighthouse on an island off Western Australia. He meets the lively Isabel and marries her, but two pregnancies end in miscarriage, the second while Tom is up in the lighthouse. Then a boat washes up on the rocks carrying a dead man and a baby who is still alive, and nobody on the mainland knows that Isabel has lost her child.
