A brass band tears through Belgrade and won’t stop until it drops, as Emir Kusturica, in the film that won him his second Palme d’Or, plays fifty years of Yugoslavia as one long, very drunken wedding. Only after a while do you see the darkness closing in, and it’s just as loud and chaotic.
On 6 April 1941 German bombs rain down on Belgrade, and Marko and Blacky join the communist resistance. Marko turns his grandfather’s cellar into an arms store, and before long he’s hiding people down there too. Blacky’s wife dies underground giving birth to his son. Marko stays upstairs, and keeps telling everyone in the cellar that the war is still going on.
