In occupied Timbuktu, music and football are forbidden, and Sissako, inspired by a real stoning in Mali, shows how humour and dignity survive in people day after day. This is African cinema of today, and it’s deeply moving, with seven Césars and an Oscar nomination to show for it.
In the dunes outside Timbuktu, the cattle herder Kidane lives with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya and a boy they have taken in. The armed men who have seized the town haven’t reached them yet. When one of his cows wanders into a fisherman’s nets, the fisherman spears it, and Kidane heads down to the river to settle the matter. He takes his gun.
