Synopsis
It’s London in 1950, and forty-five-year-old Vera Drake spends her days cleaning other people’s houses, putting the kettle on for everyone and getting a hot dinner on the table for her husband and their two grown-up children. Two afternoons a week she also performs illegal abortions, without ever taking a penny, because as she sees it she’s just helping girls who have nowhere else to turn. Her family suspect nothing, until one of the women almost dies.
