Haggis is the only screenwriter to write two Best Picture winners in a row, first “Million Dollar Baby” and then, a year later, this film, which he directed himself. In Los Angeles, Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock and Matt Dillon keep running into one another in stories that meet in car crashes.
Two men rob a district attorney and his wife, and once she’s home, Jean has the locks changed, then insists on having them changed again because she doesn’t like the Latino locksmith. In another part of town, a police officer pulls over a wealthy Black couple and pats the woman down far too intimately while his young partner stands and watches. Meanwhile Anthony and Peter drive on, sure that the city belongs to them.
