Adrien Brody plays a man who becomes a mentor without meaning to, in a school everyone just wants to get out of. Tony Kaye (“American History X”) puts a stoic at the centre of the wreckage, and the film is less about a failing education system than about how much kindness can teach.
Henry Barthes teaches literature as a substitute, which keeps him moving from school to school. His latest posting is a high school where nobody is in control any more: the class has no intention of listening, and the staff room gave up long ago. On his way home he passes a teenage girl selling herself on the street, and one night he takes her back with him. She ends up staying.
