Maïwenn, whose grandfather was Algerian, wrote this autobiographical script and plays the granddaughter, with Fanny Ardant as the mother and Louis Garrel as the ex-husband. Some families can’t survive an afternoon without a row, and this bittersweet drama is also a quiet search for where you belong.
Emir came over from Algeria in the sixties and brought up his granddaughter Neige, shielding her from her own parents. She visits him regularly in his care home, and when he dies the family starts fighting straight away, over the coffin, the clothes and a Muslim funeral. Neige, meanwhile, applies for Algerian citizenship.
