Stanley Kubrick squeezed the end of the world into a single concrete room with a table full of generals, then let one man, Peter Sellers, play the President, a British officer and a former Nazi in a wheelchair. It’s a Cold War comedy about things that aren’t remotely funny.
At an American air base at the height of the Cold War, General Jack D. Ripper orders the gates sealed and, on his own authority, sends his B-52 bombers towards targets in the Soviet Union. Nobody but him knows the three-letter recall code, and he isn’t telling anyone. Down in the underground war room, the President gathers his generals around the big round table and starts working out what to say to Moscow.
