A young German woman visits her fiancé’s grave every day, until the morning she finds a Frenchman laying flowers on it. Paula Beer, a prizewinner at Venice, plays her in a mysterious melodrama that François Ozon shoots in black and white, letting colour in only on rare occasions.
The First World War is barely over, and in a small German town a young woman still goes daily to the grave of her fiancé, who fell at the front in France. One morning she finds fresh flowers on it, left by a charming young Frenchman. The townspeople greet his visits with open hostility, while in her they awaken something very different.
