William Friedkin, the director of “The Exorcist”, serves up a brutal Texas grotesque where Matthew McConaughey plays a psychotic cop who kills for hire on the side. It starts like a black comedy until the laughter sticks in your throat, and you’ll watch the chicken leg scene through your fingers.
Chris Smith owes money to some very humourless people in Dallas, Texas, and his mother has stolen the cocaine he was counting on to pay them back. He and his father, Ansel, do the maths and decide she’s worth more dead, since her life insurance goes to Chris’s innocent younger sister, Dottie. They hire Joe Cooper, a police detective who kills for money on the side, but Joe wants an advance, and when they can’t pay it he takes Dottie as collateral.
