The Italian title, “Maschile singolare”, is grammar for masculine singular, and Antonio has spent his whole adult life as somebody’s other half. When his husband leaves, he suddenly has to rent a room, find a job and get through Sundays on his own. Sometimes, it turns out, life is sweet.
When his husband asks for a divorce, Antonio has to find, almost overnight, a place to live in Rome, a job and some reason to get out of bed in the morning, none of which he has ever had to worry about. He rents a room from a stranger, a young man called Denis. In a bakery he meets Luca and stays to watch him work, and then he signs up for pastry school.
