Bill Murray (“Groundhog Day”) hasn’t had an agent in years, so director Theodore Melfi had to reach him through the 1-800 number the actor set up. Murray plays a hard-drinking Brooklyn veteran who, against all appearances, turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to one particular kid.
In Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, the retired Vincent spends most of his time drinking and losing money on the horses. When the woman next door has no way of picking her son up from school, Vincent offers to look after the boy, for a fee. The first stop on their afternoon together is the racetrack.
