Robert Schwentke, who used to make teen blockbusters in Hollywood, shot this grotesque black-and-white tale of the final weeks of the war, in which an ordinary young man learns very fast how to give orders. His story really happened.
In April 1945, as the German army falls apart, young paratrooper Willi Herold is on the run from the military police, who shoot deserters on the spot. Along the way he comes across an abandoned officer’s uniform and puts it on. The first soldiers he meets salute him, and when he gives them an order, they carry it out.
