James Gray (“Ad Astra”) drew on his grandparents’ stories for this film, in which Marion Cotillard plays Ewa Cybulska, a Polish woman who reaches a brass-tinted New York in 1921. There she has the bad luck to meet Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), and the American dream is nothing like she imagined.
In America in 1921, doctors hold Magda in an isolation ward, and that same afternoon her sister Ewa is put on the list of those to be sent back to Poland. That’s when Bruno appears. He bribes an official, walks Ewa out through the gate and takes her to a little theatre where he keeps a chorus of girls, and only then does he tell her what the favour will cost.
