After “Let the Right One In”, John Ajvide Lindqvist wrote the story behind this Cannes Un Certain Regard winner: part thriller, part romance, part magic realism. Its heroine works at a border crossing and can smell travellers’ fear, until the day a man comes through whose smell is different.
Fear, shame and guilt all have a smell, and Tina, who checks travellers at the border, can pick it up in an instant, which makes her exceptionally good at her job. She doesn’t look like anyone else, either. Then one day Vore walks through her checkpoint, and on him she can’t smell a thing.
