The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

Cristi Puiu20052h 33mDrama, Comedy

Why we chose it

Cristi Puiu built it from the case of a Bucharest man who, in 1997, was turned away by hospital after hospital until he died in the street, and it made the world notice the Romanian New Wave. It’s two and a half hours of ambulances and corridors, yet it’s full of humour. The title is a spoiler.

Synopsis

Late one evening in Bucharest, Dante Lazarescu, a pensioner who lives alone with his three cats, feels ill and calls for an ambulance, and his neighbours keep him company until it comes. What follows is a night of being driven from one hospital to the next, and at each of them someone finds a reason to pass him along.
