In the 1960s, paintings of children with enormous eyes were everywhere, and while Margaret Keane painted them, it was her husband who signed them. Tim Burton tells her story completely straight for once, and trades his usual regulars for Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz.
In 1950s San Francisco, Margaret leaves her first husband, taking her young daughter with her, and sells portraits for a few dollars at an outdoor art fair. That’s where she meets Walter Keane, a smooth talker who sells little views of Paris, and before long she’s married him. When a buyer assumes the big-eyed children are Walter’s work, he doesn’t set him straight, and soon he’s asking Margaret to keep quiet too.
