Two men who can’t cope with the ordinary world are at the heart of this warm comedy, which earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination. Their story caught on so widely that it went on to spawn a sequel, a prequel and many stage versions, from London’s West End to Poland.
Elling is forty, neurotic and almost never leaves the flat he shares with his mother. When she dies he’s sent to a state institution and given a roommate, Kjell Bjarne, a huge, good-natured man who thinks about little except women. Eventually the two are given a flat of their own in Oslo, with a care worker checking how they’re getting on, and the hardest part turns out to be stepping out of the front door.
