Sophie Marceau plays Emmanuèle Bernheim, the author of the book behind the film, whose eighty-five-year-old father has made his decision. François Ozon tells it as an honest, warm film about choosing how to die.
André is eighty-five when a stroke leaves half his body paralysed, and the moment his daughter Emmanuèle reaches the hospital he asks her to help him end his life. Euthanasia is illegal in France, so she and her sister Pascale start calling lawyers and a Swiss clinic that will take him, while their father says goodbye to one visitor after another.
