Ari Aster’s debut, before he made “Midsommar”, is one of the most frightening films of the 21st century, an ambitious labyrinth that turns out, surprisingly, to be a family story. Toni Collette’s grief runs into something demonic, and it leaves you wondering what else a family passes down.
Annie Graham builds miniatures for a living, and after burying the mother she hadn’t been able to talk to for years, she goes back to her workshop, even though something in the house has changed. Her daughter Charlie barely says a word, while her husband Steve wants life to carry on as before. When Peter takes his sister to a party, Charlie eats cake made with nuts, which she’s badly allergic to. Peter races her to hospital, and what follows is far worse.
