The title comes from a real, illegally built skatepark in Portland, and the story follows a skater there who is hiding a dark secret. Rain Li shot the tricks on grainy Super 8 and Christopher Doyle filmed the rest on 35mm, with a cast of non-professionals Van Sant found on MySpace.
Sixteen-year-old Alex lives in Portland and spends every afternoon at an unofficial skatepark that everyone calls Paranoid Park. One night a man dies by the railway tracks, and Alex is to blame. A few days later a detective turns up at school and calls the boys out of class one by one, but Alex keeps his mouth shut.
