Al Pacino and Sidney Lumet made only two films together, and both are seen as the essence of ’70s cinema. A magnetic Pacino plays a cop fed up with corruption in a sticky New York, and Serpico was a real man whose story led to reform of the city’s police.
Frank Serpico leaves the police academy meaning to do an honest job. A few years later, everyone knows he’s the only man in his unit who doesn’t take bribes. When he reports it, his superiors move him to another precinct, where it’s exactly the same. He takes it higher and higher, but the only thing that changes is how fast the doors shut in his face.
