Synopsis
A young girl lives with her widowed mother, the owner of an umbrella shop in Cherbourg. She is in love with a twenty-year-old car mechanic with whom she plans to secretly get married. However, after announcing it to her mother, she forbids her to do so. When the young man decides to present himself in the army and departs for Algeria, the girl discovers that she is pregnant. After her mother’s insistence, she is forced to accept a precious stone dealer’s marriage proposal.
