Paolo Sorrentino (“The Great Beauty”) made this early film about a tailor they call Golden Heart, who lends money at monstrous interest, and the price he names to a father who can’t afford his daughter’s wedding is perverse. Think Beauty and the Beast, made predatory and grotesque.
Outside Rome, seventy-year-old Geremia keeps a tailor’s shop, shares a home with his bedridden mother and lends money on the side at extortionate rates. A father who can’t pay for his daughter’s wedding comes to him for help. Geremia offers him lower interest, but in exchange he wants Rosalba, on the day she gets married.
