Blocked by the censors in India and submitted for the Oscars by the UK, Sandhya Suri’s tough crime debut caused a stir at festivals around the world. A newly widowed woman puts on her late husband’s uniform and is pulled straight into the investigation of a teenage girl’s murder.
In India, a policeman’s widow can take over his job. So when her husband is killed in a riot, Santosh Saini puts on the uniform and is posted to a station in a small town in the north. Soon a fifteen-year-old girl is found raped and dead. She was a Dalit, from the lowest caste, and when Inspector Geeta Sharma takes over the case, she brings Santosh with her.
