Steven Soderbergh’s second feature after the Palme d’Or-winning Sex, Lies, and Videotape remains a criminally overlooked hybrid of biography and feverish fantasy, transforming Kafka’s life into a dark, paranoid universe steeped in German Expressionism while dismantling the very idea of the cinematic biopic, turning its subject into the protagonist of his own nightmares.

Synopsis

In Prague in 1919 lives Franz Kafka, a civil servant and writer of strange, unsettling stories. His isolated existence is shattered by the mysterious disappearance of a close acquaintance, sending him through the labyrinthine streets of the city and into a world seemingly torn from the pages of his own fiction.
