Why we chose it

After twenty years in Hollywood, Paul Verhoeven (“Basic Instinct”) went home to the Netherlands to make this war thriller about a Jewish singer who joins the Dutch resistance and spies on the Germans. It shatters the comfortable myth of who were the heroes and who were the collaborators.

Synopsis

In the occupied Netherlands in 1944, the Jewish singer Rachel Stein is hiding from the Germans. A lawyer arranges a boat to take her and her family to safety, but the crossing ends in tragedy and Rachel is the only one who survives. Under the name Ellis de Vries she joins the resistance, and when her comrades are arrested she is given a mission: to seduce the officer Ludwig Müntze. Soon she is working at the very heart of the German headquarters.
