Why we chose it
Matthias Glasner won the screenplay award in Berlin for a film that grew out of his own life: his parents, he once said, didn’t simply die but spent years doing it. He turns that into something like a symphony, solemn one moment and absurd the next.
Synopsis
When her husband, who has dementia, finally goes into a care home, Lissy feels a relief that doesn’t last, because her own body is starting to fail. Her son Tom is in Berlin, conducting rehearsals of a symphony about dying that a friend of his wrote, while her daughter drinks and has got tangled up with a married man. It’s been a long time since anyone in this family called anyone else.
