When a boy fails his school-leaving exam and half of Hungary blames his teacher, a teenager lands at the centre of a scandal that splits the country. Gábor Reisz didn’t even apply for state funding, which this subject would never get, and his Venice prizewinner could just as easily be about Poland.
Ábel is in love with Janka, and in the Budapest summer he can’t concentrate on his school-leaving exams. Janka, for her part, has fallen for their married history teacher. Ábel fails his history exam, and when he tries to explain it to his parents, he says something that isn’t true.
