Winner of the Palme d’Or, an Oscar and a Golden Globe, and one of Ingmar Bergman’s favourite films, this adaptation of a classic Danish novel earns the word epic. A Swedish father and son move to a Danish island full of disappointments, but the boy keeps on believing.
In late nineteenth-century Bornholm, an elderly Swedish widower comes ashore with his young son looking for work, but nobody will take him on until the island’s biggest farm reluctantly does. Lasse is put in charge of the cows, and father and son are given a bed right beside them. Little Pelle herds cattle and learns Danish, even though the local children make him prove his courage by pushing him out onto an ice floe.
