Provocation and scandal has long been Paul Verhoeven’s métier (Basic Instinct, Her), so it’s no wonder that, at 82, he dares to tell the story of a lesbian love affair in a convent, while also making an apt commentary on the different iterations of Faith and the Divine in our lives.
Synopsis
In the late 17th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Capable from an early age of performing miracles, her impact on life in the community is immediate. When Benedetta takes a young woman into her convent in order to rescue her from her abusive family, the two women will engage in a passionate love affair with unpredictable consequences. Based on a true story, as it was written down on the book by Judith C. Brown.
